Visual Communication: Photo communication and types of photographs. Ethically evaluative

Visual Communication: Photo communication and types of photographs

It breaks my heart to even use this image as an example of an ethically evaluative image as it is such an emotional provoking photograph.

This image of the child with the vulture represents the ethically evaluative category as it creates a sense of moral judgement to the photographer. This photograph was ethically questioned as to whether the photographer should of been helping this poor child or capturing the image. This is an extremely powerfully image that does present the question how could one photograph this situation instead of trying to help the poor judgement? Could you have this on your conscience that you took this photograph of a poor child being about to be eaten by this vulture instead of helping it? What would other peoples response be to this image?

This image was captured in March 1993 while on a trip to Sudan by photographer Kevin Carter. This images shows a starving toddler trying to reach a feeding centre when a vulture landed nearby. Carter reported taking the picture because it was his “job title” and leaving. In 1994, the photograph won the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography. The fate of the child is unknown.
